Changing Tides Crochet “Granny” Square Pattern – Creative Crossings CAL

Changing Tides Square

The stitch pattern is the Deep Chevron pattern Lorene of Cre8tion Crochet used in the Changing Tides Coverup with Furls Crochet in the summer of 2017.  It was my first crochet-a-long and I had to ask what a CAL was in spite of the 50 years of experience I have in crochet and knitting.

Materials:
1 skein Red Heart Soft in Charcoal
6mm (J) hook, or hook needed to obtain gauge
yarn needle
scissors

Stitches:
ch = chain
sl st = slip stitch
dc = double crochet
dc3tog = double crochet 3 together
Special Stitches

dc3tog– double crochet three together
yarn over (YO), insert hook into first st, YO and draw up a stitch, (three loops on hook), YO and pull through first two loops (two loops remaining on hook), YO, insert hook in next st, YO and draw up a loop (four loops on hook), YO, pull through first two loops on hook (three loops remaining on hook), YO, insert hook in next st, YO and draw up a loop, pull through first two loops on hook, YO and pull through remaining four loops. 


Additional Terms:
BLO = back loop only

Gauge:
1 pattern repeat is 14 stitches and is 3 ½ inches or one completed chevron. The square has 3 pattern repeats of 14 stitches and equals 10 inches by 17 rows for a 10×10 inch square before trim is added.

Measurements:
12×12 inches after blocking

Additional notes:
Rows 2 to row 17 are worked in the back loops only (BLO).

Pattern (US Terms):
ch 45,
Row 1: 2 dc in 4th ch from hook (counts as three dcs in first ch), dc in each of the next 3 chs, * [dc3tog] 2x, dc in each of the next 3 chs, [3dc in next ch] 2x, dc in each of the next 3 chs, [3dc in next ch] 2x, dc in each of the next 3chs; repeat from * until 2 sts remain, 3dc in last ch, ch3 (counts as first dc of next row), turn.

Row 2:  Ch3 and turn, 2dc in the first st (counts as three dcs in first st), work bolded sts in the back loops only, dc in each of the next 3sts,  [dc3tog] 2x, dc in each of the next 3sts, *[3dc in next st] 2x, dc in each of the next 3sts, [dc3tog] 2x, dc in each of the next 3sts, repeat from * until one st remains,3dc in last st (top of ch3 from previous row).

Repeat row 2; 15 times for a total of 17 rows.

Fasten off.

Edging:
Round 1: Attach the yarn to the starting chain, ch 2 (counts as first st of round), working along straight edge, put 2dc sts in each row to the top which will be row 17. Make a corner by (2dc, ch1, 2dc). The next part is to square up the chevrons by using 1 dc in the bottom of the chevrons and dc across the tops of the chevrons, make a corner (2dc, ch1, 2dc), working along straight edge, put 2dc sts in each of the 17 rows, make another corner (2dc, ch1, 2dc), join with sl st to top of ch 2.
Round 2: ch 2 (counts as first st of round) dc in each st around, create corner by working (2dc, ch1, 2dc) in each ch-1 sp, join with sl st to top of ch 2.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Block for best results.
