Changing Tides Square

The stitch pattern is the Deep Chevron pattern Lorene of Cre8tion Crochet used in the Changing Tides Coverup with Furls Crochet in the summer of 2017.  It was my first crochet-a-long and I had to ask what a CAL was in spite of the 50 years of experience I have in crochet and knitting.

Materials:
1 skein Red Heart Soft in Charcoal
6mm (J) hook, or hook needed to obtain gauge
yarn needle
scissors

Stitches:
ch = chain
sl st = slip stitch
dc = double crochet
dc3tog = double crochet 3 together
Special Stitches

dc3tog– double crochet three together
yarn over (YO), insert hook into first st, YO and draw up a stitch, (three loops on hook), YO and pull through first two loops (two loops remaining on hook), YO, insert hook in next st, YO and draw up a loop (four loops on hook), YO, pull through first two loops on hook (three loops remaining on hook), YO, insert hook in next st, YO and draw up a loop, pull through first two loops on hook, YO and pull through remaining four loops. 


Additional Terms:
BLO = back loop only

Gauge:
1 pattern repeat is 14 stitches and is 3 ½ inches or one completed chevron. The square has 3 pattern repeats of 14 stitches and equals 10 inches by 17 rows for a 10×10 inch square before trim is added.

Measurements:
12×12 inches after blocking

Additional notes:
Rows 2 to row 17 are worked in the back loops only (BLO).

Pattern (US Terms):
ch 45,
Row 1: 2 dc in 4th ch from hook (counts as three dcs in first ch), dc in each of the next 3 chs, * [dc3tog] 2x, dc in each of the next 3 chs, [3dc in next ch] 2x, dc in each of the next 3 chs, [3dc in next ch] 2x, dc in each of the next 3chs; repeat from * until 2 sts remain, 3dc in last ch, ch3 (counts as first dc of next row), turn.

Row 2:  Ch3 and turn, 2dc in the first st (counts as three dcs in first st), work bolded sts in the back loops only, dc in each of the next 3sts,  [dc3tog] 2x, dc in each of the next 3sts, *[3dc in next st] 2x, dc in each of the next 3sts, [dc3tog] 2x, dc in each of the next 3sts, repeat from * until one st remains,3dc in last st (top of ch3 from previous row).

Repeat row 2; 15 times for a total of 17 rows.

Fasten off.

Edging:
Round 1: Attach the yarn to the starting chain, ch 2 (counts as first st of round), working along straight edge, put 2dc sts in each row to the top which will be row 17. Make a corner by (2dc, ch1, 2dc). The next part is to square up the chevrons by using 1 dc in the bottom of the chevrons and dc across the tops of the chevrons, make a corner (2dc, ch1, 2dc), working along straight edge, put 2dc sts in each of the 17 rows, make another corner (2dc, ch1, 2dc), join with sl st to top of ch 2.
Round 2: ch 2 (counts as first st of round) dc in each st around, create corner by working (2dc, ch1, 2dc) in each ch-1 sp, join with sl st to top of ch 2.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Block for best results.

  1. This pattern doesn’t look right. In Row 1, the *to* directions won’t make a chevron pattern. You need dc3tog for the valleys and 3dc clusters for the peaks. Repeating 3dc clusters will just make it spiral. I haven’t gotten to a point where I can even try Row 2, but I think it has issues too. If you add stitches at each end of the row, you have to decrease at some point too. I think I know what you’re going for, and I am really looking forward to this pattern, but the picture does not match the instructions.

      1. I haven’t received an email, but these changes still don’t work. I don’t know how you achieved the picture with the instructions listed here. There are still two 3dc clusters in a row. The rest of my questions are helped by discovering the finished product photo is upside down. That makes a huge difference! I think these instructions work for Row 1:
        2dc in 4th ch from hook (counts as 3dc in first ch).
        DC in next 3ch.
        (DC3TOG) x2.
        DC in next 3ch.
        *(3dc in next ch) x2.
        DC in next 3ch.
        (DC3TOG) x2.
        DC in next 3ch.*
        Repeat *to* one more time.
        3dc in final ch.
        Ch3, turn.

  4. Row 2 doesn’t seem right. If you repeat from the * all you get is a whole row of dc. Surely there should be some shaping somewhere.

    1. Thank you for your question. You are not the first to norice. You are correct. The repeats were in the wrong spot. I thought this was corrected regarding the repeats. Please let me know where you found this pattern so I can correct it properly in the correct site.

  5. Hi also there are no Bold stitches so not clear which stitches should be in the back loop only. Took this as a project to do whilst away for the weekend for the Creative Crossings CAL but it just does not work.

    1. Hello Yvonne
      Thank you for your question. All the stitches in the chevron are to be in the back loop. This gives a nice texture to the ripples of the square.
      There are three parts of a stitch. The front loop the back loop and the post.
      As look down from the top of your work you will see two loops. The one closest to you is the fron the at the back is the loop to insert your hook into.

  6. The illustration has disappeared. Plus the amended instructions do not match the illustration which I printed before it disappeared. I give up. I’ll find another square to do or create my own pattern.

    1. So sorry to read this Janelle. I have made the appropriate changes and ensured the chart is there. I did change the charts and think you must have been in between my changes.
      I apologize for your frustration. This is my not only my first attempt at Crochet-A-Longs but at blogs. I guess I still have a thing or two to learn

  8. Pattern still doesn’t make since. Worked it 7 times before reading comments. So thankful someone corrected it. Trying to do edging now. dc in the valley and DC on top to. No further details. If I do dc for both how will it straighten out??? This pattern, quite frankly, stinks. 🤬 Hopefully I can figure out or find another square to fill in for this blanket 😭
